Question of the Day: Mac or PC?

Mac versus PC

source: Ed Yourdon

I purchased a new computer a couple of weeks ago — a monster desktop after years of working my laptops to death, literally — and I really struggled with the whole Mac versus PC debate.

In the end, I went with a PC, both because of my experience (my last Dell desktop is over 10 years old and we still use it) and — to be honest — because of the cost. I know all the arguments about why the extra expense with a Mac is worth it, but the bottom line is I got everything I wanted for several hundred dollars less than a similar Mac with a smaller monitor.

That said, I’m fascinated by how passionate some people are about their computer choices (ahem, especially Mac users), and today’s question of the day is:

Do you have a Mac or a PC? Why?

Do you love your computer?

What is the biggest factor in your computer purchase(s)?

If you’re a Mac user, have you ever regretted the decision?

If you’re a PC user, have you ever considered a Mac?

Well I’m a bit of an odd one to be honest! I do love my computer of course.

I’ve got a Macbook Pro but I run Windows on it as well as Mac, I get an option at startup, to be honest I almost always use Windows because a lot of the specialist programs I use don’t run on Mac.

I would buy a mac again, I know it costs more but I believe it will remain a good fast machine for longer than a PC would.

3 years ago we needed new computers at home. I am the tech person in the house—so the decision about what to get was up to me. I assumed we would get PCs as that is what we had always had. However, I kept reading and couldn’t find consensus on what people really liked and worked well. I couldn’t figure out which way to go.

I started looking at Macs. I found that Mac owners seemed to be happier with their purchases than the PC people. (Obviously this is a huge generalization!) We didn’t know anyone who used a Mac, though. We went to the Apple store and had fun playing with the computers. We also talked to good friends in another state who had always been Mac people. They confirmed to me that Mac was the way to go–at least for us.

We have since purchased four–2 iMacs and also 2 MacBook Pros (which were graduation gifts to our kids). We are very happy with our Macs. I think their advertising is correct—”they just work.”

We have never regretted our purchases. If someone gave me a new PC I would use it, but I wouldn’t choose to purchase one at this point.

I’m in that boat right now – we’re researching computers to purchase a new desktop, and I’m not really sold on whether to buy a PC, or a Mac. I’ve always been a PC person, and the experiences I’ve had with Macs weren’t great [the REALLY old ones.] But the new ones look much better, and since Mac is standard in my industry, I’m torn as to which to choose.

I use a networked PC at school and an older white Macbook at home. My sweetie, who is a digital prepress technician, does all of his work on his Mac at work, and he has a refurbished newer (NOT newest) Macbook at home.

My daughter and SIL have a Macbook Pro.

We have had problem after problem with our home PC that we let the kids use and would LOVE to get a family room Mac for them.

    I have iPad lust, too.

Full disclosure: My sweetie, my two older kids, and I all have iPhones. The 11-year-old will get one on the way into high school. It syncs our family calendar, let’s us see where the kids “really” are through Loopt, lets them research quick stuff since the PC hardly ever works, and works as our alarm clocks.

    We love MACS!

I have always used PCs. I run autocad for work and cannot afford to purchase on my own a mac version. My husband just bought a MacBook and LOVEs it. Everything is so much easier to install – programs, printers, etc. For personal use I think they are great, but if you need to send or receive files from PC users, it can be difficult due to compatibility issues.

    • Teri

Not true at all that there are compatibility issues between files sent from PCs to Macs. That may have been the case years ago, but not now. I can open anything a PC owner sends my way. I work for a company where our clients are mostly Mac users. They receive advertising, documents, etc. from all types of customers who I’m sure are mainly PC … no problem.

Desktop PC. But we never buy pre built ones. We always research the components and build, upgrade, and repair it ourselves. Has to be fast for my gamer hubby. Not sure on the price difference compared to pre-built PCs or Macs, but I think it’s cheaper and we get exactly what we want when we build it ourselves. And we don’t need the package deals with monitors and keyboards because we already have better ones anyway. I’ve never looked into buying a Mac, but I’ve heard they are better for some things, 3D animation for example. But for our uses we like the PC we built. (AMD 2.8GHz quad core, 4GB RAM, Radion 4650 1GB Video Card, Win XP, built about 9 mos ago)

I’ve always been a PC person- most IT people I know hate Macs. I actually have a MacBook that I really like, but my productivity is low using it. My husband uses a PC because so many programs he needs are windows only. And I don’t see the point of putting windows on my Mac. Kind of defeats the purpose. Since I’ve always been able to understand windows better than Mac, I’m building my own desktop with a windows OS. No, I haven’t done it before! But it’s a good way to learn the ins and outs of your system and make sure it keeps working well.

I’ve always used PCs. We have a lovely Dell desktop that works great for us. I, of course, only use Firefox as my web browser.

I have a Dell netbook which is OKAY, but often glitches up. Not thrilled with it.

I have major, major Mac lust though! I think because every creative-type that I know is a very ENTHUSIASTIC Mac person. I fancy myself as a creative-type, I suppose, so I guess I just want to be in with the cool kids. ;)

Honestly though, PC works just fine for my purposes.

Mac all the way! Someone above put it perfectly. They just work! You don’t have to worry about viruses, defragging, weird system errors, etc. I am the IT person for our small business and everyone here in on PCs and I spend SO much time troubleshooting crazy problems. Things that just stop working for no reason. I have 3 Macs at home and I’ve used Macs since 1995 and never had problems with them. The one time I had a problem, I brought it to the Apple store and they fixed it right away FOR FREE. They’re just better machines and the cost is not an issue because the last longer. Spend $1500 now and get a computer that will last for years or spend $800 every 3 years… Macs RULE!

We recently bought a PC for the same reason….it was several hundred dollars less than a Mac. For us (more specifically me), the PC had the basic tools I needed and I couldn’t justify spending that much more.

We’ll see how long it lasts…maybe in the long run it’s better (more cost effective) to buy the Mac. For me the computer needs to be a tool, not a toy. I say this because I need to limit my time at the computer and concentrate on my little ones. So it was also a decision based on priorities. The PC offers fewer distractions : )

we recently had a PC vs. Coffee incident – the coffee WON.

The pc was only a year old and had a few issues already, and I’m a pretty good computer geek. I knew I wanted a Mac so we ran out and got one. I don’t think I’ll ever go back to a PC. The Mac is so easy to use (a little learning curve) Applications are simple to install and I love that so many of the programs are integrated which makes using the calendar and e-mail so simple. I love that I can simply click and drag a photo into a document, click and drag a photo into an e-mail. It’s just simple. I spent $800 on my Macbook and would love to get another! Also the Apple store employees are amazing. I signed up for the One to One classes and they are worth the extra money! If you need help with anything they are more than glad to help and don’t make you feel stupid. I’m a Mac!

I just bought my first MacBook Pro in December. Two things had been stopping me–price & the fear I wouldn’t know how to use it after being on PCs for 20 years. Well, I will never go back. I love my Mac!

I wrote a blog post about it – Mac vs PC – Pros and cons for Writers and Poets here:

It was definitely worth the price.

A little background…I am a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MSCE), have worked in the IT field for over 13 years. In other words, a certified geek? For years, I despised Mac’s, mostly because I hated trying to support them in a corporate setting within a Microsoft environment.

3 years ago, my boss at the time suggested I give them another try, so I did. I agree with what others are saying, they do “just work”. I know they are more expensive on the front end, but so far I think it is well worth the price of admission. I don’t have the quirky problems typical of a PC, don’t worry about viruses, malware/spyware, or if it is going to wake up from being put to sleep.

Every time one of my friends or family asks me to fix their Windows PC because of a virus or some other software related issue, I perch myself on my soapbox and go at them. The lack of aggravation being on a Mac is well worth the extra money. How valuable is your time?

The one regret about purchasing a Mac, I didn’t do it soon enough!

I’m running Ubuntu, a Linux distribution. I’ve had my hp tablet laptop for just over two years now, which originally came with Vista. I’d been an XP user for years, and overall, was quite happy. Vista, however, made me want to pull my hair out on a daily basis. I installed the Windows 7 release candidate (which, admitedly, was quite fantastic) but when install time came, I simply didn’t have the space in my budget for a new OS.

So I tried Ubuntu. And, much to my surprise, and much like a mac, it just worked. Wireless, the second monitor, mp3s, sound. Everything works. The software is well integrated, I have far more choice in how my software behaves, and for the few software bundles that require Windows, (evernote being the most important to me!) I can run those too. Security concerns are minimal (most users don’t even run any anti-virus) I do presentations for work, and users (even advanced users) who bring in Macs battle constantly with the PC-centric display configurations, which all still work with my ex-Windows laptop.

And best of all, it’s all free.

I never thought I would go this route, as I’m not really a computer geek – I have no real command line skills, but Ubuntu has finally reached the point where it’s not required.

Just thought I would share my thoughts from another perspective, but from a regular lurker :)

I know I just posted below but had to add to this! I love Linux, I have it running on a first generation Eee PC that I use when watching films on my main laptop and have to say it is brilliant! Definitely a good way to revive an older PC that wont run windows anymore.
The only reason I didn’t turn this into my full time OS is my old laptop had hardware issues that killed it in the end and my Eee PC, while lovely, has much too small a keyboard to use on a full-time basis.

I have a Mac and have done since shortly before Christmas. With my Windows Laptop it was less than 2 years old when it “died”. Died meaning I would get up in the mornings, boot it up, have breakfast, a shower, do some work (about an hour in total) and it would just about be ready to use, it was a Toshiba Business laptop – supposedly top of the range. My Mac on the other hand is lift the lid and go, if it starts running slower it’s because I haven’t restarted it in a fortnight.
Mind you I should point out that I’m lucky that i don’t have any Windows specific programs that I have to run, but my MacBook Air is perfect for me!

I have a Mac desktop. We also have PC desktops and a PC laptop. There are pros and cons for each system. I love my Mac! I love that adding software and hardware is a simple process that doesn’t crash my computer. I don’t worry about viruses, although I am sure that as they get more popular, that will eventually change. There are still a few things that are not available for Mac but I don’t need them so it works for me. I will not go back to a PC for me but I understand why many people still have to deal with them.

I’m a “PC” user (although I hate that term, they are all PCs). I have a custom built computer made for me by my husband. I dual-boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu and use Ubuntu primarily. I like it better because I don’t have to worry about viruses, it runs faster than Windows, and all my documents are compatible. I use Windows when I need to (like to print online coupons), but for the most part I use Ubuntu.

I also want to say Windows 7 is a huge upgrade from XP. I really like it as far as Windows goes. It boots faster, and runs quickly. I highly suggest anyone favoring Windows to upgrade to 7.

I used a Macbook in High School, it was okay but I didn’t really like it. It gets the job done, and also has compatible features, but it just never really stuck with me. It was really pretty looking, but it froze up a lot.

Not sure how long ago high school was for you, but you really should give a Mac another shot. The compatibility issues are not like they use to be. Funny though, you only use Windows when you have to, Linux most of the time. :)

I had the first Mac laptop years ago. The only reason I got rid of it was because it was basically outdated. It was made without a modem, color screen, and internal hard drive! I used my husband’s PC for years, but was constantly frustrated over viruses and the dreaded blue screen of death. I finally bought a Mac mini (5 years ago) which was very affordable, and have loved it every second. The only problem I’m running into now is memory… easily remedied.

I love Macs. We used to have PCs, and had problem after problem with several different ones. In 2002 we switched to Mac, and I don’t ever want to go back. The stability of the operating system is so much better, and they’re much more intuitive. Even if I don’t know how to do something, I can usually just figure it out. Another added bonus is that the vast majority of computer viruses are written for PCs, so a Mac is not affected.

I have never regretted making the change, and I would probably just cry if I had to go back to a PC.

ALL MAC ALL THE TIME! I do have a Windows emulation program that I use on my Mac since my company’s required software is not Mac supported I have to use a virtual machine. But this is the ONLY thing I use the PC for!!! We have 4 Macs at home… 2 laptops and 2 desktops. Once you go Mac you never go back!

We have one Mac and 4 PC’s in this house. To say we are geeky would be an understatement ;)

The Mac is mine and honestly, I have been PC for so long that the transition for me wasn’t as AWESOME as everyone told me it would be. My biggest issue is I am more of a google than a PC or a Mac and google and mac have be come foes lately. So, the things that I love about google, just aren’t the same on the Mac.

But, it is spring, so I should probably try again ;)

    • http://thegirlinthemiddle.wordpress.com Molly

      Ok, my love is restored.
This post made me get my mac back out and some of the programs have been updated and for today, I am happy again.

So, now the rest of the afternoon will be spent relearning this puppy ;)

Mac’s rule! We have both at home. The pc was given to us. The pc is always freezing up with a virus and has some type of problem. I’ve been a Mac person for decades. I just don’t run into the same type of problems that pc users have to deal with. I won’t go back. Love my macs!

I worked in the music industry for years and all I had was a PC. When I met my hubby he introduced me to a MAC and like they say, you never got back. Simply put, we NEVER get a virus. It’s a refurb MAC and we’ve never had a problem. Ever. You can run almost any PC program on a MAC with software called Parallels. We MAC users are so passionate b/c they just work.

Another Mac, here. Background: I am a military instructor in PC hardware, PC Software, Soldering, and the UNIX operating system. I have a Mac at home, an entire lab of Sun machines at work, two PC laptops at home and my DH has a PC desktop for gaming. I never have issues with my Mac, whereas we seem to be constantly rebuilding DH’s desktop to keep up with games and get rid of viruses, even though we use some pretty outstanding anti-virus software. Mac’s are built on the UNIX/BSD operating system which is a system admin class that i teach. I didnt just drink the Mac flavored kool-aid but I serve it to my friends too!

Macs! We have both-=2 MacBook Pros 1 mac desktop, 2 pc laptops and a pc desktop (all fairly new–within 18 months running windows 7). The PC’s are collecting dust when not running specific programs we need for work! I did install windows on one of the Macs but broke down and bought another PC laptop and uninstalled it. Everything about macs is so much better–EVERYTHING!!!! I too have i-pad lust and will get one–it’s a “need”. (and we too all have iphones)

I LOVE my Mac, I’ve even named him MacGyver. ;)

It’s totally worth the money – every single penny. It’s a joy to use (after two/three weeks of getting used to a new interface, after which is becomes second nature) and never gives me any problems.

I did have a faulty hard drive, but it was replaced under warranty in my own home, which was great. Since then, not a problem.

Plus, no viruses and no blue screens of death.

I went through so many PC’s and so many headaches, that if you added up all the repair bills I’m sure my Mac has cost me so much less.

I’d never used a MAC in my life and was strictly a PC girl; but after being fed up with years of those PC issues (you know the ones) I made the switch to MAC. I was hoping I’d like it… turned out I LOVED it. I can’t say enough good things about MAC – I know why we MAC owners are all so “Passionate” about them now. I guess you have to own one to know. I will never go back to PC. I’m in love ;-)

I’m a PC. I had 2 Mac in the 90′s but they were always crashing and hard to get software for. When I moved to a new job, they were exclusively supporting PCs and so to allow work to be done on the home computer I switched. Many co-workers now have Macs but honestly I can’t imagine buying all new software and PCs are much cheaper.

We’re a Mac family… they’ve been very easy to use, completely reliable, and virus free. I am pretty computer illiterate, and I can take them out of the box and use right away. My husband uses both at work, and prefers the Mac. Over about 10 years, only a couple repairs were needed, and were efficiently handled at the Apple store. The only issue we’d had were power cords on laptops getting broken at the point of connection–but they newer ones are all magnetic.

I’m a Mac, and I’ve converted my husband.

I’ve always used Macs, but my husband is completely tech illiterate. He didn’t think that he would ever be able to get it when it came to computers.

Finally convinced him that the problem wasn’t him…it was the equipment.

We bought a Mac, and needless to say, he loves it.

They’re so user-friendly, and anything that goes wrong with them can usually be fixed by calling Apple, and having them guide you through the problems that you are having.

My Mac runs the same as it did the day I pulled it out of the box and plugged it in. If you are honest with yourself, can you say the same about your PC?

Never having a virus, or having applications quit constantly is wonderful. And, I love the Time Capsule/Time Machine.

My husband and I are saving for the IPad.

    Can’t wait!!!

We’re Mac users for the most part. I have 2 Macs at home and use a PC at work. I grew up with Macs back in the 80s and 90s but started working on PCs in HS. I understand the price factor of Macs deterring a lot of buyers. However, I like to buy products that will last for me. Plus, I save up for large ticket items which allows me to buy what I need.

If I got a PC free, I would use it but I have not had any PCs that have lasted more than a few years. And those have crashed or suffered other problems. I haven’t experienced any difficulties or changes when using Google like one guest wrote but will stay aware of potential conflicts.

We also have a lot of Mac products: iPhone, touch, iPods in various forms. So I guess we’re pretty gung-ho on Macs :-)

I used PCs for many years at work – but as soon as I needed to buy my own computer, I went with a Mac, and have never regretted it for an instant.

As others have said, things (almost always) just work. When I need help – when there are hardware failures, for example – the folks at the Apple Store have been extremely helpful. For example, I was given a new keyboard for free when mine stopped working – even though the keyboard was out of warranty!

Migrating from Mac #1 to Mac #2 was another example of how nicely things can work. I expected to spend about a day reinstalling software and such. Instead, a window popped up asking if I was migrating from another Mac, and if so, did I want to move my files? When I said yes, it had me hook up a cable and press a button. Some time later – an hour or so? – everything was on my new Mac. Awesome.

The Mac seems to be designed the same way I think; it’s been intuitive to me from the start. And I like that the Mac and its software LOOK nice, too – good typography, graphic design, industrial design, etc. I spend a lot of time on the computer; I want a tool that delights me.

So yeah, add me to the list of people who love their Macs.

Hi.. I have a macbook and I will never go back to PC. I had always had the worst experience with PC and always wondered if there wasn’t anything better. So when I got the opportunity, I bought it. Everything is so much easier and I feel like the mac really talks to me.. I think that once people try the mac they will never go back. I think that most people are scarred of the change. But it’s really worth it.. Everything looks so much better on a mac.. I just love everything Apple.. Right now I’m putting my eye on the Ipad.. such a great invention..!!
So yeah, I’m a Mac lover..

All about the Mac! I work in a PC heavy field – legal services. When my hubby, who’s a graphics guy showed me how he could run Windows and 4 other programs at the same time on his MacBookPro, I was astounded…. mostly because his Windows on his Mac ran better, smoother and faster than the same Windows program on my PC – I was sold! Shortly thereafter, my husband got a job in a PC heavy corporate marketing dept. He converted the entire department to Mac and 1/2 the Company’s IT team. One IT guy said, after working on MACS, “these darn things could make my job obsolete!”

For me, the lack of needing to purchase all the PC accouterments: spyware, spam-ware, virus protection subscriptions and continuous software upgrades has by far outweighed the cost of my solo, initial $1500 investment in my MAC. Not to mention the amount of time I’ve saved – as a person who works based on billable hours, the time I save is precious. I don’t reboot, have things freeze, lose data, wonder what happened etc. I run Windows and OSX on my MAC simultaneously and repeatedly have less issues with Windows on my Mac than my colleagues who run PC’s only.

Interestingly enough, the MAC learning curve was enlightening. I would try to solve a problem, ask my husband what I needed to do and he would repeatedly say to me, “you’re over-complicating these issues. Just do this…” I realized that Microsoft has changed the way people look at problems… we use Microsoft logic instead of regular logic! Amazing!

Mostly I love the APPLE business model – don’t release anything until you’ve worked out all the kinks and don’t expect people to have to buy things to make your product run properly. Apple treats the consumer like an intelligent being. Can’t say that about Microsoft!

We have a PC and a Mac. We purchased the PC in 2001 and although it still works it is very, very slow. We had to completely strip the hard drive a number of years ago and install a new OS because a virus prevented us from doing an factory restore. We recently purchased an I Mac and are very pleased with it. Frankly, the main reason we got the Mac is because it ended up being less expensive then a similarly equipped PC. A secondary reason is that we were pretty disgusted when Microsoft released Vista and then right after that released Windows 7. We will continue to use our PC which runs on XP until it dies but we will be slowly adding more Macs to our household as we can afford them.

I had both PC and Mac in the past. My heart prefers Mac for a variety of reasons, but my pocketbook prefers the PC. I have a Toshiba laptop and it has given me a lot of problems in the year and a half since I’ve had it. My previous Toshiba was bullet proof, so I thought I was making the right choice in getting another one.

My next computer will be a Mac.

    I’m a MAC and my husband’s a PC.

But that’s because he works on PC all day. And guess what, the other day he had to get a new work computer AGAIN. We had a new PC 2 years ago and it spent a year freezing, bogging down, crashing and be generally was more work than it was worth. It went in for repairs so many times I lost count. Finally, just shy of a one-year warranty, the store bought it back (at half the price) and my husband bought me a MAC.

    I LOVE IT.
I love how it looks, all sleek on my desk. Really a boon to my de-cluttering lifestyle.
I love how it operates – it just works!
I love that it comes with lots of software I need – and not a pile of trials I don’t need.
I love that it is intuitive – you just do what you need to do without messing with the boot volumes or system folders etc.
I love that it syncs beautifully with all of my other technology – and boy I have a lot of it! (Wii, iPod, Google calendar, Evernote among other)

It is great. I’ll stop boasting now.

I lost two PCs in three years due to viruses. I backed up religiously so I “lost” nothing but time, but it was also very frustrating. I couldn’t keep losing computers at home (and yes I used anti-virus stuff, but the bad guys are quicker than the good guys it seems).
I’ve now had my MacBook longer than either of the PCs. No viruses, no work stoppages (or slowdowns), easy to find fixes for anything, and more cool programs than I have time to learn–photo, movie, music organization is SO easy. And I find the mouse movement and cursor placement more intuitive in the design of this machine.
I don’t hate my PCs. But I couldn’t keep after them for the amount of time I spent on the web. So Microsoft Office for Mac allowed me to transfer everything here, and I am a very happy camper. I miss the full size monitor but I’m also too lazy to figure out how to hook it up so that’s my own fault! Otherwise, no complaints.
